Celebrating 40 Years of CECH-Citizen Education Clearing House

A

CECH will celebrate its 40th anniverary this month.

The Citizen Education Clearing House (CECH) grew out of a concern held by educators and lay people for the need to improve citizenship education that emphasized participatory democracy. CECH created programs that helped develop student commitment to informed, responsible participation in governmetn, politics, and civic affiars. Such commitment can be fostered, CECH believes, by giving students the opportunity to actively engage with adults in the real political life of the community-not just in mock or substitute programs.

CECH was founded in 1967 by Teresa M. Fischer, as a subsidiary of the Education Council for Responsible Citizenship, a standing committee of the Higher Education Coordinating Council. CECH later became an independent organization in 1970 when it obtained a tax exemption as "not-for-profit" under IRS regulations. Funding has been secured through public and private sources.
